Can openers are fantastic tools that can help expedite work in the kitchen. Typically, can openers are handheld devices that puncture and peel away the tops of cans. An issue with these manual openers is that they can dull and wear down over time, potentially making it very difficult to open cans by hand. Thankfully, there do exist automated alternatives.
The typical electric can opener is an appliance with a lever, a rounded groove to place cans in, and the gear mechanism that opens the can. When the can is placed into the groove, the user pushes the lever to the "on" position and the can is slowly rotated by the gear, which simultaneously punctures the can as it rotates and removes the top of the can in the process. These appliances are very simple; they need only be plugged in and turned on with the pull of a lever. Additionally, their relatively small dimensions make them excellent choices for countertops or tabletops, where they won't take up much room.
Air-powered can openers are another option. While they are largely similar in design and make to electric can openers, their main distinguishing feature is the air-powered piston. When the lever or switched is pressed, a concentrated blast of air pushes a piston that punctures the can below and allows the top to be removed.
For those looking to diversify their options with can openers, electric and air-powered openers may be right up your alley.
