Are your beer glasses truly clean? The answer may not be as clear as you think.
Beer, unlike other alcoholic beverages, is easily contaminated. Oils, dirt, soap, fingerprints, and various substances and contacts could negatively affect the taste and aesthetic of the beer. On top of that, these impurities can affect the beer even if they cannot be tasted or seen directly. Thus, we come to the concept of "beer clean." This term refers to containers or glasses that do not have any impurities or foreign materials that could impact the beer.
Luckily, there are certain signs that a beer glass may not be beer clean. One sign involves the beer foam. Contaminants can prevent beer foam from lacing, meaning that the foam does not cling to the glass as the drink is depleted. Another sign includes the way water flows through the glass as it is rinsed. Glasses with contaminants in them typically form beads along the inside when rinsed with water. Essentially, you'll want to carefully inspect a glass through rigorous tests to determine whether or not it has substances that could contaminate the beer.
The best way to clean a beer glass is to wash it thoroughly with soap, water, and preferably a sponge or other tool. Bus staff should be careful to focus on eliminating smudges, smears, unusual odors, or anything else that could linger in the glass even after an initial wash. To that end, it is generally regarded as good practice to wash glasses multiple times by hand. There are options for machine washing, as well. There do exist specialized detergents that target and eliminate most residues from glassware with the help of particular chemical agents.
Whether washing beer glasses by hand or by machine, it is equally important to make sure to be more than just "clean." For the best taste and the best aesthetic, you've simply got to be "beer clean."
